Are you curious about a typical day of an iOS developer at 9to5? In this blog, our colleague Dana takes you behind the scenes of his Thursday.
“A typical workday usually starts around 8:45 with checking my email. The great thing about a smaller company like 9to5 is that customers often have direct contact with our developers, including me. That’s why I first look for any customer questions. Then I check team emails, updates from Apple about app releases, and finally the remaining messages.
After that, it’s time for a quick maintenance round. We release updates regularly, so I review the analytics of all our apps to see if everything is running smoothly and whether there are any new crashes. This way, we can often fix problems before users even notice.
If I find a crash, I investigate how often it occurs, how many users are affected, during which action it happens, and how much time it would take to fix. I create a Jira ticket for it, and if it’s time-consuming or not urgent, we address it later during the larger maintenance weeks.
This Thursday at 11 a.m., the monthly app improvement session is on the schedule. Dominique, our Android developer, and I present new developments in our field and possible improvements in our cross-functional collaboration. One great result from these sessions is that we now use Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile, so we minimize duplicate work on Android and iOS.
After lunch, I can fully focus on coding. Occasionally a question comes up or I collaborate with backend, Android, or web teams to solve an ad hoc problem, but mostly I enjoy programming with music in the background.
At 4:30 p.m., the DemoDo starts, where I get to show what I’ve been working on over the past week. It’s not mandatory, of course, but it’s a lot of fun to share new features with the rest of the team.”
